How is Doctor Doom such a huge threat?

Hi guys, could someone explain to a non-comics reader, without too many spoilers, why Dr Doom is considered such a huge menace? The only two versions of Doom I've really seen are the Fantastic Four 2005 movie (fantastic cast, by the way) and the Spider-Man animated series from the '90s. In both, he seemed pretty underwhelming to me.
